Iceland is home to 269 named glaciers, most of which come in various shapes and sizes. The largest ice cap in the country Vatnajokull holds the title as Europe's largest glacier, covering an area of 8,300 sq. km, about three times the size of Luxembourg. In the summer, more melting takes place, so glaciers often retreat up the valleys they've carved, then grow back during the winter. Its margin was black with ash and rock, most of it carried within the ice for years but finally melted free.
