Kirkjufell Mountain

Kirkjufell or “Church Mountain” is a mountain on the Snæfellsnes peninsula near the town of Grundarfjörður in Vesturland in Iceland.It is reconized as one of the ten most beautiful mountains in the world and it is the most photographed mountain in iceland.

Formation: The mountain was formed between two glaciers, that caused the shape of the mountain which is very steep from all sides. There was volcanic eruptions that each created the distinct layers in the mountain. It was formed through a process in iceland called “nunatuk”, glacial erosion. The mountain peaks at 463 feet so it is a centerpoint of the surrounding area. Its steep sides make it very hazardous to climb. There has been three fatalities climbing it. The small trail takes about an two and a half hours to climb and you have to be a very experienced mountain climber.

Nearby Kirkjufell Waterfall comes from the nearby lagoon with a drop of 54 feet. It is separated by rocks into three falls and it is very beautiful. It is often used for photographing. Photographers get the falls and the mountain in a very popular picture that is very pretty.

Kirkjufell was a shooting location from Season 7 of Game of Thrones. The mountain is showcased from the scenes ‘North beyond the Wall’ when Jon Snow, The Hound and Jorah Mormont, amongst others, brave the wilderness in hopes of catching an undead wight. It shows how influential kirjufell is.

The surrounding town, Grundarfjordur has a lot to do too. There is plenty of other mountains and hiking trails. In addition there are gorgeous beaches where you can see the mountain and take photos or even take a very cold swim. There are plenty of tours to take around the town and to the mountains. .
